A TCM Approach To Working With The Elderly And Dementia
In this presentation, Angie Hughes takes us through important differences in treating chronic versus acute disorders in the ageing population. She discusses the memory, the mind, how this is seen in TCM and different ways of looking at memory loss in dementia. This leads into important considerations for intake skills when interviewing the elderly and those clients with some level of dementia and poor cognitive functioning.
Practical considerations are covered in detail, including the treatment of people in wheelchairs, specific distal point protocols and how to design your treatment space to make it accessible to this population specifically.

Angie Hughes studied acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) in the UK and graduated from the London School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine in 1989. She was in practice for 8 years before moving to Seattle in 1997 to join the teaching faculty of the Northwest Institute of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NIAOM). While teaching core curriculum there, she studied Chinese Herbal Medicine and received her Maser's of Acupuncture in 2002. In the fall of 2002, she joined Bastyr University clinic and teaching faculty and currently supervises Master's level acupuncture students as they complete their clinic rotations. Her teaching speciality has become geriatric medicine with a focus on the treatment of chronic pain and symptoms resulting from CVA's (stroke). With over 30 years in private practice, Angie applies her clinical observations to her practical teaching which you cam benefit from in the comfort of your own home or office.
